COLLAPSE AND NETTING OF ROCKS ISKARSKO DEFILE

Project:

Strengthening of rock slopes with steel meshes on Road II - 16 Mezdra - Sofia

Contracting Authority:

"Trace Svoge" Ltd.

Location:

Road II - 16 Mezdra - Sofia, from km. 18+820 to km. 52+380

The collapse of heavily eroded rock slopes was carried out, as well as the removal of woody vegetation and shrubs on a total area of 22,825 m2;

High-strength steel protective nets have been installed in numerous areas with increased erosion, with a total area of 22,825 sq.m.

To ensure reliable reinforcement, the nets are anchored at the top of the slopes at intervals of 1 meter, with the total number of anchors installed being 1,260.

Ø12 mm steel support ropes have been laid to further strengthen and stabilize the protective nets, with a total length of 11,140 m.

All activities for securing and strengthening rock slopes are carried out via rope access (industrial mountaineering / alpine method) by certified height workers.

The project was implemented without stopping road traffic, with strict implementation of temporary traffic organization and safety measures.

We have implemented a project to secure and strengthen rock slopes on the national road II-16 Mezdra – Sofia, in the area of the Iskar Gorge. The activities have been implemented in multiple sections from km. 18+820 to km. 52+380, characterized by complex mountainous terrain and a high degree of erosion.

The project aims to stabilize and secure the risky rock slopes located directly next to the road infrastructure, in order to prevent collapses and landslides of rock masses and ensure road safety.

As part of the implementation, the collapse of unstable rock masses and surface erosion was carried out. The terrain was cleared of woody vegetation, dangerous for traffic safety. Steel protective nets were installed to strengthen the rocks, and they were anchored in the upper part of the berms and reinforced with additional supporting galvanized metal ropes.

All activities were carried out using rope access (industrial mountaineering) and alpine work at height, using a team of certified rope access workers. This method allows for safe and effective securing of sections in difficult-to-reach mountainous terrain, without the need for heavy machinery and with minimal impact on road infrastructure.

By combining rock reinforcement technologies with nets, anchoring and rope systems, long-term stabilization of critical sections in the Iskar Gorge was achieved and safety on one of the busiest mountain road sections in the country was significantly improved.

Our teams demonstrated a high level of expertise in the implementation of complex projects for strengthening rock slopes through rope access and industrial mountaineering, including work in extreme terrain conditions and large-scale infrastructure projects.
