Strengthening of rock slopes with steel meshes on Road II - 86 Asenovgrad - Smolyan
"ISA 2000" Ltd.
Road II - 86 Asenovgrad - Smolyan
The areas have been cleared of surface erosion by collapsing unstable and dangerous rock masses;
A hot-dip galvanized double-twisted hexagonal mesh with a wire thickness of 2.7 mm and a grid of 120x80 mm has been installed;
The nets are anchored at the top and bottom of the slopes with hot-dip galvanized steel bars φ 28;
For additional reinforcement, steel ropes of 12 gauge are installed on the nets.
All activities are performed via rope access by certified rope access technicians.
The project was implemented without stopping road traffic, with strict implementation of temporary traffic organization and safety measures.
We have implemented a project, part of the overall rehabilitation of the republican road II-86 Asenovgrad – Smolyan, aimed at strengthening and securing rock slopes in sections with an increased risk of landslides and falling rocks. The site is located in mountainous terrain with intensive traffic, providing access to one of the most visited winter and summer resorts in Bulgaria – Pamporovo.
The aim of the project is to increase the safety of the road infrastructure by stabilizing eroded rock masses located in close proximity to the active roadway, and minimizing the risk of road accidents.
The project included cleaning of eroded areas and collapse of unstable rock masses on the slopes, installation of hot-dip galvanized double-twisted hexagonal meshes with Ø2.7 mm wire and 120×80 mm opening, anchoring of the protective meshes in the upper and lower parts of the slopes with hot-dip galvanized steel anchors Ø28 mm and additional reinforcement of the system by installation of steel ropes Ø12 mm
All activities were carried out via rope access (industrial mountaineering) by certified technicians for working at height, which allowed for safe and effective implementation in difficult-to-reach mountainous terrain without the need for scaffolding or stopping traffic.
The project was implemented in strict compliance with temporary traffic organization, and vehicle traffic on road II-86 was not interrupted during the entire period of work. This ensured continuous transport connectivity to the Pamporovo resort area.
Through a combination of collapsing, anchoring and installation of protective mesh systems, long-term stabilization of the rock slopes was achieved and a significant increase in the safety of one of the key mountain road sections in the country.
