PROTECTING ROCKS IN THE TRENCH ON THE MOST – KARDZHALI RAILWAY LINE

We have successfully implemented a project for urgent restoration and strengthening activities aimed at securing rock slopes along the railway line in the section from km. 82+500 to km. 83+000, in the inter-station area between the village of Most and the city of Kardzhali. The project is commissioned by the National Railway Infrastructure Company.

The site is at increased risk due to the presence of unstable rock masses in the immediate vicinity of the railway infrastructure, which necessitated urgent measures to strengthen and prevent landslides and falling rock blocks.

Within the framework of the project, the collapse and removal of unstable rock masses on the rock slopes, the installation of a high-strength protective system made of TECCO (Geobrugg) steel mesh, drilling, installation and injection of self-drilling anchors type IBO R32 for additional strengthening of the protective system were carried out.

The works were carried out in complex geotechnical conditions, requiring precise planning, high technical expertise and strict adherence to safety measures when working in rocky terrain and in close proximity to an active railway line.

All activities were carried out using the rope access method by certified technicians for working at height. Lightweight probes were used to drill the self-drilling anchors, allowing work in high and difficult-to-reach places.

By combining rock reinforcement techniques, anchoring and rockfall protection systems, effective stabilization of the slopes was achieved and a significant reduction in the risk to the railway infrastructure and passing trains.
